Explore Barkway & Beyond

While you're visiting the market, why not take some time to explore the charming village of Barkway and the beautiful surrounding countryside?

A Glimpse into Barkway's History

Barkway is steeped in history, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and flourishing for centuries as an important market village. Its position on the old coaching route between London and Cambridge brought prosperity, evidence of which can still be seen in the many attractive 15th-18th century buildings lining the High Street. It was even a stop on the medieval pilgrimage route to Walsingham. Features like the village milestone (1728), the wagon wash near the church, and the stunning St Mary Magdalene Church (parts dating back to the 13th century) all tell tales of its past.

Barkway sits within a region rich in heritage. It's part of The Hundred Parishes, an initiative celebrating the unique cultural landscape of over 100 parishes across North Essex, East Hertfordshire, and South Cambridgeshire. You can delve deeper into the area's history and find more local walks on the The Hundred Parishes website. The village also lies within the Barley Wolds, an area of rolling chalk hills noted for its history, footpaths, and landscapes. Explore more about this specific area at the Barley Wolds guide.

Walks Around Barkway

The rolling hills and historic paths around Barkway offer excellent walking opportunities.

  • Hundred Parishes Walk 133 - Barkway Village: For a walk focused on the village itself, exploring its historic buildings and features like the church and wagon wash, download the detailed guide here: Hundred Parishes Circular Walk 133 (PDF).

  • Exploring Further Afield: Numerous other footpaths crisscross the area. You can find routes heading towards neighbouring villages like Reed or Barley, offering panoramic views and a deeper immersion in the Hertfordshire countryside.
